With the blowing of a whistle and pushing of the actuating lever, Marintec China 2013 officially began.  The four-day exhibition and conference was unveiled and officiated by senior officials from the industry, namely Mr Su Bo, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, Mr Zhou Bo, Vice Mayor of Shanghai Municipal People's Government, Mr Song Jiahui, Safety Director of the Ministry of Transport, Mr Jime Essink, President and Chief Executive Officer of UBM Asia, Mr Andreas Nordseth, Director General of Danish Maritime Authority, Mr Zhang Guangqin, President of the China Association of the National Shipbuilding Industry, Mr Huang Pingtao, Chairman of the Chinese Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, and Dr Martin Stopford, President of Clarksons Research Services.

Occupying six halls of the Shanghai New International Expo Centre, over 1,700 exhibiting companies met 57,886 visitors from 88 countries and regions, a stable 13% increase compared to the last edition in 2011. This shows that Marintec China is the exhibition to attend.

With the theme of "Green Technology, Transformation, Breakthrough", the Senior Maritime Forum ran in conjunction with the exhibition.  The Forum provided an in-depth discussion on the topics it had covered, which included Shipping and Ports, Shipbuilding, Ocean Engineering and Marine Finance. The Forum attracted a lot of attendees who gained insightful information from renowned and high-level speakers from the Chinese government and Chinese companies, as well as from well-established overseas associations, companies and organisations. It also served as an ideal platform for the industry participants to exchange market news and learn from each other.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., Dec. 19, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- The International Customer Management Institute (ICMI) has released its 2013 report, A WOW Customer Journey: Actionable Data in Today's Multichannel Contact Center, a guide to the more effective use of data and analytics in a multichannel environment.

The problem of big data has been building in contact centers for some time. While harvesting data has become extraordinarily easy, knowing which numbers to crunch or which metrics to track can be a far more challenging prospect.

The proliferation of messy unstructured dataemails, calls, chats, tweets, video, desktop usage, etc.has further complicated matters. Without the right tools and guidance, contact center agents cannot handle the volume of data or lay their hands on appropriate information.

In response, ICMI decided to conduct a research survey in the late summer of 2013. The goals were threefold:

  1. Gain an understanding of how multichannel contact centers are currently handling their data
  2. Explore the benefits of creating a "Wow" customer journey across all interactions
  3. Help organizations decide which analytics tools and data enhancements are necessary

"In today's hyper-connected world, customers expect to have relevant and personal conversations through their channel of choice," says Sarah Stealey Reed, Content Director for ICMI. "Contact centers must know how to use customer and agent analytics to anticipate needs and short-circuit problems. If they understand what data are important, businesses can provide a much better multichannel experience."

The rigorous study had 542 respondents (primarily executives, directors and managers) from every major industry in both the U.S. and abroad. Findings from the study were compiled and analyzed by ICMI's research team.

The results were eye-opening. Although:

  • 67% of contact centers currently use collected data to manage overall agent performance
  • Only 48% use data for identifying improvements in customer satisfaction and 36% admitted they don't do it at all

In addition: 

  • Over 60% of contact centers are not proactively providing customer information to an agent
  • 48% of contact centers consistently collect and report on metrics they don't use
  • 69% of agents have to navigate around multiple screens and interfaces in order to locate information
  • 41% of agents are still manually keying in customer contact information

The survey was designed to get at the root of agent challenges:

  • How are contact centers currently leveraging their agents?
  • How can agents and their supervisors adapt to meet the demands of a multi-connected customer?
  • What kinds of decisions are executives making about multichannel technologies and analytics?
  • Where should businesses direct their resources in 2014?

"Allowing customers to use their channel of choice is now considered the minimal acceptable level of service in contact centers," says Sarah Stealey Reed, Content Director for ICMI. "But it can be tricky for companies to know how to prepare their agents for multichannel interactions. The annual China Vending & Kiosk Show is the largest tradeshow of its kind in Asia. It was launched in 2004 and has grown in line with the development of the vending retail market in China since then. Key exhibiting categories at the show include automatic vending machines for food, beverages, medicines, books and newspapers. The show also covers self-service systems such as water and beverage dispensers, laundry machines and coin-operated amusement machines. Products at the show also include self-service terminals, solutions and equipment, together with parts and accessories for vending machines. SAN FRANCISCO— December 12, 2013 — The Game Developers Conference (GDC) has opened nominations for the 14th annual Game Developers Choice Awards through January 4, 2014.  Produced by the UBM Tech Game Network, the Choice Awards are one of the most prestigious honors in the video game development industry and will take place the evening of March 19, during GDC 2014 at the Moscone Convention Center in San Francisco, CA.
 
The Game Developers Choice Awards celebrate the skills and expertise of developers recognizing them as leaders in their craft across multiple game development disciplines.  Award nominations in 10 categories are now open for games that were released during the 2013 calendar year.

Research from the Karolinska University Hospital in Sweden, described in the video "Big Flaw in RA Treatment Success Record: Remaining Pain" by Karolinska rheumatologist Jon Lampa, tracked records from more than 8000 RA patients and controls in a Swedish database and found that many continued to have pain three months after beginning treatment.  It's important for doctors to track pain as well as inflammation, he says.

Many rheumatologists refer to a "window of opportunity" during which they can begin to treat RA early enough so that it never becomes severe. 03-Dec-2013 RheumatologyNetwork Presents New Findings on Diagnosing Torn Meniscus of the Knee

NORWALK, Conn., Dec. 3, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- UBM Medica US announces that RheumatologyNetwork, the leading online community for rheumatologists, now features information contradicting a time-honored principle in diagnosing torn meniscus of the knee, a condition common to normally aging people.

Doctors have long been taught that clicking, popping, and cracking sounds, or buckling or locking of the knee are sure signs of a damaging tear in the meniscus, the lining of the knee joint. But new research suggests that, among people over age 45 (and especially in the absence of any injury), these sounds and sensations do not indicate either the presence or severity of a meniscal tear, or bear any relation to the likelihood that a meniscal tear will improve after surgery or physical therapy.

It's "a real departure from all that we've learned from younger people with traumatic tears," says Dr. Jeffrey Katz, a rheumatologist at Boston's Brigham & Womens Hospital and professor of medicine at Harvard University. "It turns out that it's a different disease in middle-aged and older people, so we have to kind of rethink our rules of thumb about diagnosis and prognosis."

He describes the research in detail in the video "Physical Signs of Meniscal Tear: Red Herrings in All But the Young, recorded during the recent American College of Rheumatology annual meeting in San Diego. The video also includes hints about signs that are meaningful among people over 45 who have knee pain.

Some of the data in the study are taken from the recent METEOR trial, a randomized controlled study that showed that arthroscopic surgery does not provide clearly superior results compared to physical therapy for tears in the meniscus. Dr. Katz was one of the principal investigators for that study.
