SINGAPORE, Dec. 21, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The second edition of the Singapore Jewellery & Gem Fair, held from 23 October to 26 October 2014, attracted 9,615 visitors and 161 acclaimed exhibitors from 21 countries across 10,000 square metres of exhibition space at the Sands Expo and Convention Centre, firmly sealing its position as the largest fine jewellery fair in Singapore and the region. Compared to its inaugural edition last year, the number of visitors increased by 10 percent.

The four-day fair presented several pavilions from Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, Thailand and the United States of America, as well as independent exhibitors from other countries such as Austria, Belgium, Germany, Israel, Italy, and Switzerland. The fair also showcased a stunning Exquisite Pavilion and an exclusive Designer Atelier, each housing a number of local and overseas suppliers with a spectacular trove of fine jewellery and gems for professional trade buyers, private collectors and general public.

The second consecutive year of success shows that the Singapore Jewellery and Gem Fair is being recognised as the most influential jewellery event in the region. The fair is positioned as a professional trading platform for international jewellers to build their brand recognition and introduce their products in the Southeast Asia region.

Delivery of a piece of treasure to everyone, and more

At the fair, professional trade buyers, private collectors, jewellery connoisseurs and deal hunters found a large variety of jewellery pieces from a hundred to multi-million dollars.

"The fair is an ideal platform for jewellery companies in the Southeast Asia region like us to expand our sourcing network. Apart from business deals, we managed to acquire more information about the market across the region as well", said Gian Adhitya, Junior Manager of DEPEARL, Indonesia.

"The fair is compact which enables us to focus and find suitable jewellery suppliers we want easily", said Weerawat Woramakakun, business owner of PRAKAIPETCH, Thailand.

A showcase of young talents

The Singapore Jewellery Design Award was presented to five young jewellery designers at the opening ceremony on 23 October, 2014 to recognise their talent and creativity. These young talents were also given the opportunity to showcase their winning designs at the booth of Singapore Jewellers Association alongside many leading jewellers at the fair.

In addition, students from Jewellery Design and Management International School, Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, and Raffles Design Institute occupied a space of 72 square metres at the fair to display their creations and promote Singapore's jewellery designs to the world.

NEW YORK, Dec. 19, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- 'Tis the season for end of the year awards. And in this year where geek fare is all over the entertainment landscape, it seems like a great year to hand out the Geekend's 1st Annual Geekies.

From TVs and movies to internet memes and bad science, the Geekies have everything covered. Spoiler: He's giving Benedict Cumbatch the award for best photobomb of the year. Do you remember it? And Wagner is probably the only person giving out an award for proving men are stupid. The only thing missing is the red carpet.

Each week, Wagner looks at the intersection between science and popular culture so he's uniquely suited to make surprising and fun take on the standard end of the year awards. Who else hands out awards for epic rap battles and best scientific achievement in space in the same column?

Check out this week's Geekend to review the year in Geek and argue over the winners and losers. Join in the argument before he hands out another award for a movie that hasn't even been made yet.

15-Dec-2014 Routes Silk Road to be Hosted by United Airports of Georgia for the Second Time in 2015

MANCHESTER, EnglandDecember 15, 2014 /PRNewswire/ --

The route development forum for CIS, Central & Eastern EuropeMiddle East & Asia returns to Tbilisi in 2015

Following the success of the inaugural Routes Silk Road event which took place in July of this year, it was announced today that the 2015 event will once again take place in Tbilisi, hosted by United Airports of Georgia (UAG) under the auspices of the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development.

Routes Silk Road is the route development forum that connects CIS, Central and Eastern EuropeMiddle East and Asia and was held for the first time earlier this year. The event, which will once again take place in the beautiful and historic capital of Georgia, will offer attendees the perfect platform to do business and improve air transport networks to, from and within the region. Over 300 senior level executives from airlines, airports, tourism authorities and other aviation stakeholders are expected to attend to discuss air service development.

The decision by United Airports of Georgia to host the event for the second year running is largely due to the success of the 2014 event and a number of key routes which they negotiated during Routes Silk Road 2014. Air Arabia and Aeroflot commenced new routes from Tbilisi International Airport in October 2014 (to Sharjah and Moscow respectively). Etihad Airways is due to begin flights from Tbilisi to Abu Dhabi in October 2015. Furthermore, UAG is currently in the process of active negotiations with two airlines to begin routes from Kutaisi International Airport.

Kate Aleksidze, CEO of UAG said: "The market for air travel in Georgia and the surrounding region is currently one of the fastest growing in the world. The recent increase in passenger traffic generation is a result of strong development in the regional economy and improved access provided by airlines, as a result of which tourism growth rates exceed 20 percent annually, leading to substantial increases in foreign direct investment. Therefore, it is so very important for us to spread the word aboutGeorgia and our airports to improve their connectivity and attract more low-cost and legacy carriers. Hosting Routes Silk Road this year, proved to be an excellent opportunity to achieve those goals and we are genuinely excited to welcome the event once again to Georgia in summer 2015."

"We are delighted to be returning to Tbilisi next year following the great success of our first ever Routes Silk Road event," saidKatie Bland, Director Routes for UBM Live. "This year's event proved that Georgia - a corridor connecting several important economic regions - is an ideal location for Routes Silk Road and the number of attendees surpassed our expectations. We are looking forward to working once again with the dedicated team from United Airports of Georgia on Routes Silk Road 2015 and its stakeholders and see this event go from strength to strength."

Hosting Routes Silk Road in 2014 allowed UAG to showcase Georgia as a destination and the interest shown by airlines and the new routes already secured have proved that there is still huge potential for the Georgian aviation market. The media coverage gleaned from the inaugural event placed Georgia at the centre of the aviation industry's attention and spread throughout the country and the Caucasus region.

UAG, as an Airport Authority of the state, also operates Kutaisi International Airport, which opened in 2012 and is the region's first low-cost airport. It is mostly focussed on attracting low-cost carriers to facilitate tourism development in Georgia and Routes Silk Road 2015 promises to help its hosts, UAG, develop more new routes for Kutaisi International Airport as well as for Tbilisiand Batumi airports and further promote Georgia to the wider aviation community.

Georgian airports have experienced a robust 17% compound average growth rate (CAGR) for the past 8 years, with annual increases of between 9% and 25%, traffic in 2014 was nearly four times the volume achieved in 2005.

12-Dec-2014 InformationWeek Geekend: Oculus Rift Vacations Need Work

NEW YORK, Dec. 12, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The Oculus Rift virtual reality helmet holds the promise of delivering a Star Trek-like holodeck experience to the average person. In fact, there's a demo of how British Columbia in Canada looks in virtual reality.

(UBM Tech/InformationWeek)

InformationWeek Geekend author David Wagner, a big Star Trek aficionado himself, tried the virtual British Columbia tour on the Oculus Rift recently, and while it certainly seemed real, the idea of a whole vacation in a virtual world seemed to lack something.

In his latest Geekend column, Wagner explains:

"The funny thing about virtual reality marketing is that virtual reality is supposed to replace, augment, or at least mimic plain old, real reality. How good does it have to be to make us feel like we saw the real thing? Could a video designed to make us want to see something make us feel like we already saw it?"

Wagner adds that the Oculus Rift could be the next big thing for holiday gift giving next year, so there's still plenty of time for the technology to improve, especially if GoPro-style cameras can shoot specifically for the virtual reality experience.

Until then, you'll still have to take the kids to Disney World.

Every week, David Wagner's Geekend column looks at the sometimes funny, sometimes head scratching intersection between technology and the geeks who love it.

11-Dec-2014 Embedded Developers to Share Practical, Real-World Expertise at ESC Boston 2015

SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 11, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- UBM Canon announced the first confirmed set of local-area embedded developers who will deliver talks in a new session format at the Embedded Systems Conference/Expo Boston on May 6-7, 2015. Registration for the conference opens January 12, 2015 at http://embeddedconf.com.

These new "post-mortem sessions" chronicle in technical detail the design and development of a real-world embedded systems application, including a detailed discussion of the trade-offs and choices made (and reasons) during the design process.

"We know that other engineers are one of the most important sources of information for engineers, and that embedded developers know that no product design is a cakewalk; in truth, there's a lot of BS involved," said Karen Field, Creative Director of ESC. "These talks are intended to 'tell it like it is,' meaning speakers will present a detailed discussion of things that went wrong, what the workarounds were, and what would be done differently the next time around."

In a talk on defensive programming, Ark Khasin, a senior software engineer at General Electric, will share real-world techniques deployed in some GE industrial devices that have helped engineers avoid hardware and software glitches and bugs in the field.

"Firmware architects and developers at all levels will benefit from taking a second look at a critical component--or even recognize that it was missing in the design in the first place," said Khasin.

Using code snippets and toy-size examples, Khasin will cover some of the most dreaded glitches for embedded developers, from managing last-ditch processing of unhandled exceptions before and after reset to detecting stack overflow to ensuring the integrity of critical data and outputs in case of a trap.

Bigbelly Solar's VP of Engineering Michael Feldman will chronicle the company's sometimes rocky road to success as an early pioneer in the constantly-evolving IoT space, noting there has not been a shortage of pitfalls that engineering has run into over the years. Feldman will describe the evolution of the embedded system, from the early constraints to what they would do differently if they were to start from scratch today.

Given the rapid evolution of processors and architecture, is it possible to make the hardware in an embedded system independent of the choice of processor? Boston-area Engineer Peter Anderson tackles this topic in a session on an open-source electromagnetic tracker he is developing. A hobby project that he intends for others to replicate, he will describe the unusual requirements this application places on the processor and share insight into the design decisions and trade-offs he made to allow hardware compatibility with multiple processors.

Though well-intentioned, many engineers seem to forget that the most important customer of their code or schematic is not their compiler or CAD program, but rather other engineers. So their documentation isat times somewhat lacking. Speaker Chris Svec, senior principal software engineer at iRobot, loves to tell the story of getting ready to track down the engineer who documented his code poorly--only to find out he wrote it himself.

In his talk "Empathy Driven Development," Svec will share examples of documentation both good and bad. He will also explain why coding with empathy is not nonsense, but a mindset that leads to communicating what you've done so that others can understand it easily, which in turn can lead to a significant competitive advantage.

ESC has expanded its North American portfolio to include events in Boston and Minneapolis. These additions join an already successful lineup that includes events in Silicon Valley, California, Bangalore, India, and Sao Paulo, Brazil.

ESC events provide an innovative approach to continuing education for embedded systems designers and technical professionals involved in designing electronics products and systems. Attendees will hear from industry leading speakers and get an insider's look into the latest tools and technologies in the business. For more information visit: www.embeddedconf.com.

10-Dec-2014 InformationWeek: 5 Big Data Trends You Missed in 2014

NEW YORK, Dec. 10, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- In 2014, big data moved from tech buzzword to mainstream acceptance.

(UBM Tech/InformationWeek)

For the last 12 months, the tech world has watched big-data analysis grow from a handful of early adopters to technology used by some of the biggest names in the industry, including pharmaceutical giants Merck and Pfizer, manufacturing behemoth GE, and mainstream stalwarts such as the Weather Channel and Facebook.

Along the way, the money followed. The top three NoSQL database vendors have managed to raise more than $200 million in venture capital cash, while the three largest Hadoop distributors received more than $1 billion in funding.

With such money and prestige behind this trend, InformationWeek Executive Editor Doug Henschen looks at five distinct big-data trends of 2014, and plots what's next for the industry in 2015.

In his InformationWeek article, Henschen writes:

"Many took note of the recent declaration by Forrester Research that 'Hadoop is no longer optional' for large enterprises, thanks to compelling 'Hadooponomics' that make it a must for high-scale storage and data processing."

Join the discussion about big data on InformationWeek, and add your voice to the conversation.

08-Dec-2014 Interop Radio Spotlights Managing Tech in a Startup

NEW YORK, Dec. 8, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Managing technology, whether in the datacenter or in a PC fleet, is a tricky business even in the largest of enterprises with numerous resources and experienced IT managers and executives.

05-Dec-2014 InformationWeek Geekend: Jitters About Starbucks' New App

NEW YORK, Dec. 5, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- When it comes to Starbucks' new order ahead app, there's a good reason why caffeine-addicted IT managers and developers should wait online for their next venti mocha or latte.

(UBM Tech/InformationWeek)

InformationWeek Geekend author David Wagner has checked out of the new Starbucks app, and finds it not in keeping with the coffee house's overall theme of a slow-placed bistro where people can relax, read, and sip a beverage before rushing off.

It's enough to give Wagner the jitters. If Starbucks is speeding up, what does that say about the company? What are the lessons for app developers? As Wagner writes:

"That matters to any IT professional. Because if your app isn't aligned to your company values, your marketing strategy, your customer's needs, your app is pointless."

Every week, David Wagner's Geekend column looks at the sometimes funny, sometimes head scratching intersection between technology and the geeks who love it.

05-Dec-2014 Aeroports de Catalunya Announced as Host of World Routes 2017

The world's largest commercial aviation event to be hosted in Barcelona in September 2017.

It was announced today that Aeroports de Catalunya, Catalan Government's state-owned company, will host World Routes, the 23rd World Route Development Forum in 2017. The announcement, which took place during a press conference at the Ministry of Territory and Sustainability of the Government of Catalonia, was attended by Santi Vila, Conseller de Territori i Sostenibilitat (Minister of Territory and Sustainability); Sònia Recasens, segona tinent d'alcalde de Barcelona (Second Deputy Mayor of Barcelona); Adrian Newton, Group Director Aviation & Technology for UBM Live and Gerard Brown, Head of Future Hosting, Routes and Airport Cities for UBM Live.

World Routes is the world's largest commercial aviation event and the premier business to business aviation conference. The event consistently attracts over 3,000 senior level executives from the world's airlines, airports, tourist boards, economic development agencies and governments from over 110 countries to discuss air service development opportunities. Hosting World Routes will bring network decision makers from the world's airlines and from across the aviation industry to Barcelona and offers a unique opportunity for the city to showcase the opportunities it has to offer potential global airline partners.

In this regard, Minister of Territory and Sustainability, Santi Vila, said: "Holding World Routes will be a huge boost in making Barcelona airport the hub of Southern Europe. Our position on the map is a competitive advantage," adding: "It will be a magnificent platform for the economic promotion of the city, of Catalonia and, above all, of its businesses which are involved in the process of internationalisation and conquering foreign markets". For her part, Second Deputy Mayor of Barcelona, Sònia Recasens, highlighted that: "In the present context, the World Route Development Forum is a privileged setting in which to position Barcelona as an international air service hub and worldwide benchmark in attracting conferences and major events, which adds to our objective of increasing the city's economic activity in the public interest".

"We are absolutely thrilled that World Routes will be hosted in Barcelona in September 2017," commented Adrian Newton, continuing: "Barcelona is one of the top three congress cities in the world, one of the world's top ranking leisure tourism cities, the 5th O&D city in Europe, served by Barcelona El Prat Airport - a top 10 European airport that has experienced high growth in recent years. Barcelona is also home to one of the world's busiest cruise ports and has a thriving economy - with Catalonia responsible for more than 18% of Spanish GDP and 26% of Spanish exports. It therefore is a highly appealing host city for World Routes and the aviation decision makers that it attracts from over 110 countries. We are really looking forward to working with the Host team and their partners over the next few years".

The 2017 event, which will take place in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain, is expected to attract more than 3,500 delegates including 350 airlines, 1,000 airports and 300 tourism authorities from more than 125 countries. It will be held in the hugely impressive International convention centre, Fira De Barcelona and will take place from 23-26 September 2017.

The announcement of Barcelona as the Host destination for World Routes 2017 represents the culmination of a successful bid to host the event which was led by Generalitat de Catalunya - Departament de Territori i Sostenibilitat, Ports de la Generalitat, Departament d'Empresa i Ocupació; Agència Catalana de Turisme- and Ajuntament de Barcelona - Barcelona Turisme. The bid was supported by many of Catalonia's key stakeholders, Aeroport de Barcelona - El Prat; Port de Barcelona and Cambra de Comerç de Barcelona. In addition it is fully supported by Vueling and Emirates who have both agreed to be official carriers for the event.

Barcelona is a dynamic and modern city, with a thriving tourism industry and a strong productive sector. The economic, cultural and administrative capital of Catalonia has more than 1,600,000 inhabitants and is at the heart of a metropolitan area with close to 5,000,000 inhabitants, representing 63.4% and 10.2% of the Catalan and Spanish population respectively. The diverse, intercultural and cosmopolitan spirit of Barcelona is shown by the fact that more than 17% of the city's residents are foreigners. As such, Barcelona Metropolitan Region is one of Europe's most important metropolises. With more than 2.6M cruise passengers the city is one of the top turnaround cruise ports worldwide.

Barcelona Airport (BCN) offers some of the best short haul coverage in Europe, well above those of

Madrid or Rome, however, 3M long haul passengers fly to BCN indirect. The airport is Barcelona's gateway to the world and vital for business, tourism, congress and cruise industries. Hosting the event 2017 provides a great opportunity for the city to showcase all it has to offer and to attract new long haul services.

The announcement of Aeroports de Catalunya as the Host of World Routes 2017 marks a fantastic end to a successful year for the Routes business which also announced Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport as host of the 2016 event earlier this year.

01-Dec-2014 InformationWeek Names 2014 Chief Of The Year: Bank Of America's Cathy Bessant

NEW YORK, Dec. 1, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- While Silicon Valley is the home of technology innovation, financial services is where the IT rubber hits the road.

(UBM Tech/InformationWeek)

The financial sector is where the latest technology innovations -- from data analytics to mobile applications to information security to the private cloud -- are put to the test. And it's in financial services that InformationWeek found its Chief of the Year for 2014: Cathy Bessant, head of Bank of America's 100,000-person Global Technology & Operations organization.

In the past, InformationWeek has tended to honor leaders at the forefront of technology innovation, such as Werner Vogels at Amazon.com and Stephen Gillet at Starbucks. But in 2014, InformationWeek turned its attention to the financial services industry, where Bessant is leading an IT transformation effort at Bank of America.

Bank of America is undergoing a massive transformation that includes consolidation of legacy systems and a refocus on information security and regulatory compliance, writes Rob Preston, editor in chief of InformationWeek, in his profile of Bessant and BofA's work.

"Under a four-year plan she put into motion in 2010, BofA has retired more than 18,000 applications, many of them left over from acquisitions. For example, it's spending $100 million to consolidate five Merrill Lynch financial adviser platforms into one, a project due to be completed next year. In its wholesale banking business, 521,000 users at corporate clients in 140 countries now access its CashPro Online treasury and credit management portal in 11 languages; the portal replaced hundreds of applications and systems for everything from liquidity management to currency conversion to wire transfers. Elsewhere, BofA has consolidated 22 collateral management systems down to one. Its eight different teller systems—now one."

Following the financial crisis, Bessant is taking a conservative, practical approach to technology that ensures that data is protected and systems work to fulfill the needs of customers:

"The legacy issues in the mortgage space we are getting behind us, and we will get them behind us," Bessant told InformationWeek. "But if they were perceived to be part of a pattern of an inability to perform, they take on a much different proportional importance. I think it means the stakes have been really high for the technology solutions we develop to work, for our platforms to never be down."

Since 1986, the editors of InformationWeek have recognized a CIO or other technology leader for its Chief of the Year honor. In some years, the editors have picked multiple chiefs -- in 2001 InformationWeek recognized several CIOs who responded to the terrorist attacks of 9/11, and in 2013 IT honored five executives changing the way higher education uses technology.

For more details about Cathy Bessant and her work at Bank of America, please check out Rob Preston's piece on InformationWeek.com. InformationWeek also has some memorable quotes from Bessant, and InformationWeek Editor Chris Murphy has a look at how the bank works with technology startups to help support its IT needs.

As always, the InformationWeek welcomes your questions and comments.

LONDON, December 1, 2014 /PRNewswire/ --

eCommerce Expo, the UK's leading ecommerce event, has today revealed that its 2014 edition held in October was the best to date, with an increase in visitors, international attendance and seniority level, plus the strongest and most diverse line-up of suppliers  ever to have been involved in the show.

     (Logo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20130723/629764-a )

Over 6,000 ecommerce professionals descended upon Olympia London to experience the very latest in ecommerce technology and innovation and discover how some of the industry's best known brands including PayPal, Google, Facebook, Tesco and Shop Direct develop their own ecommerce strategy.

Emirates, Hugo Boss, Lloyds, Microsoft, Net-A-Porter, Sainsburys, Argos, River Island, TalkTalk, Unilever, Boots, Virgin and Reiss were only some of the big-name brands that attended this unique ecommerce event and contributed to the overall success of a 2% increase in total attendance (6,625 attendees), 10% international growth and 5% increase in seniority. Plus, 25% of all attendees were from within the retail sector which was an increase of 5% compared to last year.

The eCommerce Directors Club - an exclusive invitation-only programme for ecommerce leaders - attracted more than 150 participants, which was the largest attendance to date and included senior professionals from Condé Nast International, eBay, Telefonica, L'Oréal UK, Christies, Heineken, Louis Vuitton, AXA, Hilton Worldwide, KPMG, Marks & Spencer, LivingSocial and Nokia.

With ecommerce becoming increasingly vital for the retail sector and demand for modern technology that enables a more efficient process on the rise, emerging ecommerce brands such as iZettle, Avenue Imperial, Metail and One iota showcased their state of the art technologies in the brand new feature zone the "Ecommerce Marketplace of the Future". This feature provided inspiration for technologies that can be used in store, at home and on the go, including digital wallet and future payment solutions, virtual shopping solutions, 3D body scanning and wearable technology.

"With the introduction of the 'connected consumer' and increasing convergence between online and offline shopping, it's crucial that businesses consider how their customers engage with them," eCommerce Expo's Rebecca Slater said.

"The Marketplace of the Future provided the platform to assist businesses in ensuring they are able to deliver the perfect omni-channel experience and how they can make the best use of the latest technology."

In addition to the beneficial live demonstrations, this year's event boasted the finest line-up of global suppliers than ever before. With brands including Amazon, Barclaycard, Royal Mail, Alibaba.com, Parcelforce, Experian Data Quality and PayPal, the most ideal space was created for ecommerce professionals to learn what new advancements and supplier innovations are available on the current market.

In collaboration with eCommerce Expo, the eCommerce Awards for Excellence was also hailed another great success attracting a record number of guests and winners from high profile brands within the ecommerce industry. Winners included ao.com, Halfords, Barclays Pingit, Nutmeg, Warehouse Ltd with Chalk Social, and Home Leisure Direct.

"Ecommerce is a world that moves arguably faster than any other area of online business. Keeping up with consumer demand and technological advancements is a huge challenge for businesses in this sector, but it is a challenge that all of our winners faced head-on with much success," Ms Slater said.

eCommerce Expo also announced that it has been successfully certified against ISO 20121, the International Standard for Sustainable Event Management.

As one of the first global event organisers to be certified by an independent third party to this International Standard, UBM Live has now gained certification for ten of its brands including Ecobuild, Medtec Europe & Sudtec, the Protection & Management Series and CPhI Worldwide.

ISO 20121 focuses on working towards embedding sustainability into the very heart of how an organisation does business with the aim of leaving a positive legacy behind. 27-Nov-2014 Express Rail Link & Changchun Railway Ink Agreement for Purchase of New Trains

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, Nov. 27, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Rail Business Asia congratulates Express Rail Link Sdn. Bhd. (ERL) who has successfully signed an agreement with Changchun Railway Vehicles Co. Ltd. (CRC) for the purchase of six additional new trains to cater to the ridership growth of both KLIA Ekspres and KLIA Transit services.

(from L-R) Pn Noormah Mohd Noor - ERL CEO, YB Datuk Seri Panglima Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim - Chairman, Lembaga Tabung Haji, YBhg Tan Sri Mohd Nadzmi Mohd Salleh - Executive Chairman - ERL, YB Dato' Seri Jamil Khir Baharom - Minister in Prime Minister's Department, YB Dato' Sri Liow Tiong Lai - Minister of Transport, Mr Wang Run - Chairman CRC, His Excellency Huang Huikang - China Ambassador in Malaysia, YBhg Dato' Yeoh Seok Hong - Executive Director, YTL Corporation Berhad and Mr Zhou Chuanhe - Deputy General Manager/GM for Overseas Sales, CRC.

Signing the agreement was ERL Executive Chairman YBhg Tan Sri Mohd. Nadzmi Mohd. Salleh and Mr. Wang Run, the Chairman of CRC. This momentous event was witnessed by the Honourable Minister of Transport, YB Dato' Sri Liow Tiong Lai.

In his speech Tan Sri Mohd. Nadzmi said, "With the opening of the new low-cost carrier terminal in KLIA2 in May this year, our total ridership has grown by 40% to-date compared to the same period last year. The fast 33-minute journey between KLIA2 and KL Sentral Station on the KLIA Ekspres at the same one-way fare of RM35 has made it the preferred choice for air travellers.

"The growth of key townships along our rail corridor has also been a contributing factor as we see more and more people opting to commute by KLIA Transit to work. With the increased load factor, there are certainly a lot of new challenges and business potentials for ERL."

Tan Sri Mohd. Nadzmi also said that CRC was selected to supply the new trains in view of the company's excellent track record, experience and proven ability to provide trains that met ERL's requirements and specifications. Most importantly, the trains will be compatible with ERL's current rail system. He added that ERL was fortunate to have the vision to have chosen an open system, and that foresight of using standard gauge track allowed ERL to select any rolling stock from anywhere in the world. Hence, today, ERL can select the very best trains from manufacturers in China to run on its tracks.

Out of the six trains purchased from CRC, two trains will be allocated for KLIA Ekspres and the remaining four will be for KLIA Transit. Each train set will have four cars and will operate at a cruising speed of 160 kilometres per hour. The trains are expected to be progressively delivered to ERL starting in May 2016. All trains will be operated and maintained by ERL's skilled operations and maintenance subsidiary, ERL Maintenance Support Sdn Bhd (E-MAS).

Meanwhile, Dato' Sri Liow said, "I am pleased to see that since its inception, ERL has consistently delivered dependable service of the highest standards. ERL did not just introduce cutting-edge technology and infrastructure; much more importantly, it introduced a new mindset which its people have applied with success, and values which we as a nation must learn to internalise, such as punctuality, speed, efficiency and dependability." He also commended ERL on its use of open standards as it promotes an open infrastructure and systems, which in turn promote openness and improves connectivity.

The Minister added that as Malaysia's population is expected to hit 35 million by the year 2020, Malaysia will undergo greater urbanization in the upcoming years. Thus, the GTP Urban Public Transport National Key Results Area emphasises the need to raise public transport modal share in urban areas from the current 17% to 25% by 2015; and to 40% modal share by 2030.

About Express Rail Link

25-Nov-2014 InformationWeek Releases Fitness Tracker Gift Guide

NEW YORK, Nov. 25, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Are the loved ones in your life in need of losing a few pounds? Do they need something different to motivate them at the gym?

(UBM Tech/InformationWeek)

Right now, fitness trackers, such as the Fitbit Charge and the Jawbone Up Move, are some of the most notable wearables available, and these devices act as a starting point for how consumers think about the Internet of Things – a growing market that has the potential to reach $33 billion by the end of the decade, according to one report.

This year, 10 percent of US consumers are expected to buy a fitness tracker during the holiday shopping season. Another 8 percent plan to purchase a smartwatch, according to the Consumer Electronics Association. This is even before the release of the high-end Apple Watch.

To help pick the best fitness tracker gifts, InformationWeek Editor Alison Diana has pulled together a list of a dozen different wearables designed to help motivate users in the gym after the holiday season has past.

In her report, Diana looks at several different models that range in price from a modest $12 for beginners to more than $500 for serious athletes. Diana also notes about these devices:

"Most fitness devices offer similar capabilities: They track steps, calories, and sleep. Some developers differentiate their devices through software, providing more in-depth analysis that could be helpful to athletes or users with chronic health conditions. Some products include a strap; others use clips that attach to belt loops, shoelaces, or purses. For fashion-minded users, some device makers offer an array of strap designs or color choices. Then there are devices that target athletes who prefer a specific activity, such as biking or swimming."

Diana also reminds potential buyers that it's important to know how the hardware interacts with the software, and how her 12 picks work with either Apple's iOS or Google's Android operating system.

Each week, InformationWeek explores those areas of technology that are changing our lives, and the way we do business. In addition, we welcome your comments and questions. If you have any experience with fitness trackers, wearables, or smartwatches, we want to hear from you. In the meantime, checkout the fitness tracker holiday guide here.

21-Nov-2014 InformationWeek's Geekend: It's Time To Replace The Turing Test

NEW YORK, Nov. 21, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The Turing Test is perhaps the most famous test of artificial intelligence. But it was conceived in the 1950s, when computers still used vacuum tubes and the ballpoint pen was still a relative novelty.

(UBM Tech/InformationWeek)

This week, InformationWeek's Geekend author David Wagner asks us to consider what Artificial Intelligence (AI) really means – and how we can truly test the "intelligence" of computers. The answer, it seems, can be found in some of our favorite films, and Wagner offers a rundown of the best options to replace the Turing Test.

Each week, Wagner and his Geekend column look at how the worlds of science and technology are colliding, and what the latest research tells us about business, and how people seek answers to their unique problems.

"Intelligence to me means being able to adapt to a demand your intelligence hasn't been pre-programmed to do," writes Wagner. "If your joke-writing program can be asked to switch to writing poems, that's intelligence. Anything else is really neat but specialized." Please join Wagner and the conversation at InformationWeek to see if if you – or your AI program – can pass these intelligence tests.

20-Nov-2014 Network Computing Names Top Research Labs for Science & Tech

NEW YORK, Nov. 20, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- All great technology starts in a lab.

UBM Tech/Network Computing

What is now called the Internet, software-defined networking (SDN), and networking device interoperability, all started as research projects in laboratories dedicated to pushing the boundaries of science and technology.

While some labs, such as Los Alamos National Lab and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), focus on areas like military and nuclear technology, others, including CERN, look to increase humanity's understanding of physics.

With this in mind, Networking Computing and author Crystal Bedell created a list of the world's 11 top research labs for science and technology research. The list highlights the various achievements of these facilities, as well as the men and women who work for these institutions.

In addition to stalwarts such as Los Alamos and CERN, Network Computing and Bedell have included the Indiana Center for Network Translational Research and Education (InCNTRE) at Indiana University, which is working on several projects related to computer networking such as the adoption of OpenFlow and SDN technologies.

The complete list can be found on Network Computing.

As always, Network Computing wants to hear from its readers. Are there other interesting research and facilities out there that more people should know about? Share them in the comments section of the site.

19-Nov-2014 With Pay Stalled, Physicians Work to Advance Practices

NORWALK, Conn., Nov. 19, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- With physician compensation stuck in neutral, there are things medical practices can do to drive revenue farther.

www.physicianspractice.com

Physicians Practice surveyed 1,338 physicians for its annual Physician Compensation Survey, asking about personal income, practice overhead, practice outlook, and other financial issues. Many practices are struggling to stay solvent and stagnant compensation is not helping matters.

Forty-two percent of respondents said that their income last year was the same as the year prior; 16 percent said it was down more than 10 percent. Furthermore, among those who own their medical practice, 32 percent said they'd classify net income from their practice as "slightly disappointing" with another 19 percent identifying the situation as "highly disappointing."

If there's a bright spot, it appears the cost of doing business as a medical practice may be declining — slightly. Asked about their practice's overhead as a percentage of medical revenue, the majority of respondents, 34 percent, said it was between 41 percent and 60 percent. That's a reduction of three percent when compared to the same question in the 2013 survey. Thirty-four percent of practice owners also said that their overhead as a percentage of revenue was greater than last year: a drop of eight percent from last year.

So with medical practice workload rising as payments to physicians are hitting a plateau, it is more important than ever for practices to use what they have to the fullest. From making sure everyone in the practice is working to the level of their license to using your tech investments to produce valuable practice data, Physicians Practice offers tips and advice on how to make the best out of a sluggish situation.

"For physicians, this news on compensation trends is nothing new — they see it each month at their practices," said Keith L. Martin, group editorial director for Physicians Practice. "And many practices are prepared and are weathering the storm. Our goal is to give them some additional insight from practice management experts to not be reactive, but rather proactive; using the tools and resources they currently have at their practice to their advantage to combat years of flat compensation trends."

Other data from this year's survey includes:

  • Fifteen percent of respondents said patient satisfaction accounts for 11 percent or more of their annual compensation.
  • Thirty percent of physicians said all of their compensation is tied to productivity; 36 percent said this metric doesn't play a factor at all in their pay.
  • In terms of methods to boost revenue, the majority (33 percent) said they have increased the number of patients seen per day, with taking on additional work outside of the practice (29 percent) and adding ancillary services (23 percent) rounding out the top three.
  • Half of respondents said in the next five years, they will continue practice operations as they do now. Twelve percent said they plan to retire or become employed by a larger health system in the same time period.

19-Nov-2014 Customer Contact Expo Achieves ISO 20121 Accreditation for Event Sustainability

LONDONNovember 19, 2014 /PRNewswire/ --

Customer Contact Expo, the UK's largest event for the contact centre and customer service industry, has achieved accreditation for its high standard of sustainable event management. The Expo, the longest running exhibition in the sector, has never rested on its laurels since it began in 1999 and the accreditation is another fine example of the contemporary nature of the show.

     (Logo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20130723/629764-a )

The ISO 20121 signifies more than environmental sustainability and recognises the all-round management soundness of Customer Contact Expo, which the organisers are extremely proud to have acknowledged. The accreditation, testament to the long-term commitment that the show has to the customer contact industry, was a significant undertaking to manage processes and risks in a sustainable and conscientious way.

Helen Curl, Event Director, said:

"We have never shied away from change. In 2014, we changed the name of the show and repositioned our offering to reflect the changes that have taken place in the industry. Once again, with sustainability, we felt the event should reflect the modern way of doing business, which ISO 20121 guarantees."

This accreditation ensures that sound management systems, excellent processes and greater working collaboration, both internally with staff and externally with customers and suppliers, are in place. With it, the Expo is committed to delivering quality to all customers whilst limiting its impact on the environment.

With an outstanding reduction in printed materials and a fantastic level of stakeholder engagement, Customer Contact Expo was able to reduce its carbon footprint. From this position, it can continually improve the positive environmental and social impact of the event.

"As a market leader in live events, UBM Live sees it as fundamental that we are conscious of the impact that our actions have on the environment and the communities in which we operate. UBM Live strives to manage its impact by ensuring that the principles of sustainability are at the core of all our activities," said Allison Ozero, Sustainability Manager, UBM.

With over 5,000 attendees and 110 exhibitors present at the event over two days, Customer Contact Expo is the largest event for the industry in the UK. A record breaking sign-up rate of 83% by 2014 exhibitors to the 2015 show demonstrates that there is huge confidence in the market and in the future of the Expo. 47% of the visitors were Head of Department level or above, showing that the key decision-makers recognise Customer Contact Expo as the event to do business at. Over half of the visitors were actively looking to buy (an increase of 5% on last year), and 48% of visitors were wielding budgets over £500,000.

The event will be running once again at the London Olympia on 30 September and 1 October 2015. For more information, please visit: http://live.callcentre.co.uk/expo

About Customer Contact Expo:
Customer Contact Expo brings together the entire customer service and contact centre industry under one roof each year at London Olympia. It is a must-attend event for anyone who works in customer service or customer contact, with leading technology suppliers showcasing innovation and an extensive educational programme.
