21-Dec-2016 Exhibitors Bring More New Products to Malaysian International Furniture Fair (MIFF) 2017

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, Dec. 20, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Malaysian International Furniture Fair (MIFF), the largest of its kind in Southeast Asia, is set to feature a greater variety of new and innovative products from a wide range of suppliers and four country halls at its 23rd annual edition coming March.

Organised by UBM Malaysia, MIFF 2017 is again fully-booked and pre-registered visitor numbers are running strong for the four-day event taking place at Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) and MATRADE Exhibition and Convention Centre (MECC) from March 8 to 11.

The trade show which posted record US$908 million sales in 2016 will feature 500 companies and attract an estimated 20,000 buyers from 140 countries and regions.

MIFF 2017 continues to benefit from the cross-promotion of the trade show across UBM and Alibaba.com platforms as a result of a strategic "online and offline" collaboration to create the next generation of B2B trade sourcing experiences.

Around 70 per cent of exhibitors are Malaysian companies while the rest are from overseas including from China, Taiwan, Japan, Indonesia, South Korea and Vietnam.

"There will be a lot of new products releases during MIFF 2017 based on the product range indicated by exhibitors. The new products and design are very refreshing, this is great for buyers. Many companies are seeing this as an opportunity to boost their visibility and increase business leads because they want a bigger footprint in 2018 when MIFF expands to 100,000 sqm at the new Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC) and PWTC. We are also seeing very good numbers from pre-registration from over 100 countries so far," said MIFF General Manager Ms Karen Goi.

MIFF 2017 will feature a dedicated segment -- MIFF OFFICE -- to showroom the biggest range of office solutions with 130 companies at PWTC.

 

Malaysian companies which would be participating in MIFF 2017 include well-known exporters such as Merryfair Chair System, Euro Chair, Poh Huat, Soon Her Sing Industries, Oasis Furniture and Safari Office System.

The China Hall will be larger with over 150 companies as more furnishing exhibitors are coming from southern Guangdong province led by the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade, Guangzhou Council (CCPIT Guangzhou).

Other attractions are Taiwan Hall with 30 companies and Muar Hall, organised by Muar Furniture Association and a strategic partner of MIFF, will feature over 80 member companies.

Scottish food-tech start-up 3f Bio has won the first "Start-up Innovation Challenge", organised by Health Ingredients Europe & Natural ingredients in association with Agroparc and Presans and supported by Naturex. This University of Strathclyde spin-off has developed a new technology that halves the costs of Mycoprotein-production while simultaneously reducing waste material to zero. Vitamin- and fat-enriched Mycoprotein, marketed as "Quorn", is already one of the most popular meat substitutes available. The fungal protein has been available in Germany since 2012. The patented 3f-process is a milestone for Mycoprotein, as the unfavorable energy balance of the process has often been criticised in the past. This technology does not use glucose syrup and surplus sugar, waste protein and energy are returned to the bio refinery production cycle, making this process more sustainable and cheaper. The production of 3f-protein is a massive 75% cheaper than producing meat. In addition to its application in the production of Mycoprotein, 3fBiotechnology also optimises the production of bioethanol and animal feed. 08-Dec-2016 Oil Prices Under Structural Change, Say Two-thirds of Maritime Leaders: Sea Asia 2017 Survey

SINGAPORE, Dec. 8, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- More than two-thirds (70 per cent) of maritime leaders in Asia now believe the persistent volatility in oil prices represents a structural rather than cyclical change, according to new data released today by Sea Asia 2017.

The results come as the maritime industry faces its toughest period yet -- with oil prices falling by more than 70 per cent since mid-2014 -- and with the recent supply agreement by OPEC to cut production. Conducted ahead of Sea Asia 2017, the survey was carried out among maritime leaders to identify trends to shape discussions at Sea Asia 2017 next April.

Global expert on oil macro analysis and Managing Partner of Rystad Energy, Mr Jarand Rystad,  a speaker at Sea Asia 2017, said the big debate right now is whether markets are in fact experiencing a structural change or a traditional cycle.

"The continued growth of US shale fields and recent significant reduction in costs to develop this resource clearly represents a structural change. The counter view is that shale alone still cannot balance the decline in supply globally. Therefore, conventional production from onshore and offshore will still be an important part of global supply growth beyond 2020," he said.

On the recent OPEC announcement to reduce production, Mr Rystad shared, "The surprisingly firm agreement by OPEC surely puts the cartel back on stage, but the relatively modest response in oil prices could be short-lived. In the coming years, oil prices will firstly be regulated by market forces. Balancing is also happening slowly but firmly from thousands of producing oil fields around the world."

The Sea Asia 2017 survey also revealed that only a quarter of the maritime leaders expected oil prices (26 per cent) and the maritime industry overall (25 per cent) to rebound to pre-2014 levels in the next six months.

The leaders cited tonnage oversupply (83 per cent), innovation (44 per cent), and talent shortages (30 per cent) as other critical issues facing the broader maritime industry in the current down-swing.

Despite these challenges, 77 per cent of leaders said they were confident in the industry's long-term prospects.

Mr David Roberts, Managing Director of The Standard Club Asia Ltd, said it's important for maritime companies to use the period for reflection, and to keep a long-term view.

"In the past, the industry has been too focused on growth at all costs, and through this downturn we're seeing a positive shift of attitudes towards achieving efficiencies, cost-control, and sustainability. Companies should also take care not to reduce operational capacities too greatly, as they may find themselves behind when the market rebounds," said Mr Roberts.

In preparation for an eventual upturn, 85 per cent of maritime leaders are focusing on talent development, following extensive down-sizing across the industry. Tighter control of costs, greater industry collaboration, and research and innovation were also identified as the top priorities for leaders in the next 12 to 18 months.

Seatrade Chairman, Chris Hayman, said the results of the Sea Asia 2017 survey clearly show that players across the industry are facing a challenging time, and there is a real desire for collaboration in key areas.

Mr Hayman said, "During the downturn, most leaders have said they will focus on innovation and talent up-skilling to meet future challenges. In this environment, our conference themes for Sea Asia 2017, including technology and smart shipping, will provide a critical platform for discussion and debate, and will bring together exhibitors from across the region with new technologies and skill-sets."

For the first time that Tissue World will be held in Milan, in the Fieramilanocity (HALL 3), on 10 to 12 April 2017, after moving from Barcelona where it has been held since 2013 and Nice, where it started in 1993.

Her present research interests range from component and system-level ESD reliability, transient latch-up, ESD-robust high-speed I/O circuit design and more. Additionally, Elyse has authored/co-authored over 150 technical papers, presented tutorials on reliability physics at the International Reliability Physics Symposium, the EOS/ESD Symposium, and the RFIC Symposium, and she has given invited lectures at many universities and industrial laboratories. From 2001 through 2011 she was an editor for IEEE Transactions on Device and Materials Reliability and is currently an editor for IEEE Transactions on Electron Devices. Elyse was the technical program chair for the 2016 International Reliability Physics Symposium.

TAIPEI, Taiwan, Nov. 6, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- The 2016 edition of Taiwan Jewellery & Gem Fair took place at the Taipei World Trade Centre, Hall 1, on 21-24 October. This 4-day event featured 183 exhibitors from 13 countries and regions, exhibiting with 303 booths and attracted 6,963 buyers from 36 countries and regions. The spectacular exhibition was hailed by all participants to have been a great success.

Highlights of the Fair

  • The Opening Ceremony was attended by Ms. Ming-Li Hung, Chairman of the Taiwan Jewelry Industry Association, Mr. Chang Geng Hung, Chairman of the Taipei Jewelers' Association, and Ms. Sabine Liu, General Manager of UBM Asia Ltd., Taiwan Branch as well as numerous representatives of local jewellery associations and representatives from overseas. The ceremony was further graced by the presence of President of "Taiwan Control Yuan" (government supervision department), Dr. Po-ya Chang. The large number of high level representatives from the jewellery industry attests to the status of the Taiwan Jewellery and Gem Fair as the leading professional trade platform in Taiwan.
  • Spectacular catwalk shows brought by Chia Ta Jewellery showcased 20 imperial, glittering jadeite jewellery and gorgeous coloured gemstone jewellery. Each catwalk session stimulated the audience to gasp in admiration.
  • Organised by Taiwan Jewelry Industry Association, "Symposium on how to invigorate jewellery industry in Taiwan" was enthusiastically participated by government representatives and members of Jewelers' Associations from across Taiwan. Intensive discussions were carried out between the parties aiming to boost jewellery business in Taiwan. Industry participants are looking forward to the government to address legislation motions which would benefit the industry.
  • 2nd edition of Taiwan Goldsmith's Craft Competition had concluded with success at the Fair. Though the youngest nominee was only 19 years old, his technique had been affirmed by the judges, and one of the purposes of this competition which was to attract young talents and apprentices had been achieved by his participation. Future of goldsmith career is expected to be much brighter.
  • A series of seminars was held during the Fair - topics include "E-Commerce: Future of Fine Jewellery", "Potential Growth and Trend of Coloured Gemstone Market" and "Contemporary Jewellery Design - Artistic Conception of the East vs Rational Intellect of the West." 02-Nov-2016 Pharma in Indonesia: Competing for Higher Margins

JAKARTA, Nov. 2, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- IPMG members - including Novartis, Merck, Bayer, Boehringer Ingelheim, and Pfizer - have invested more than USD $1 billion in Indonesia's pharmaceutical industry over the past few years, particularity for the construction of factories and clinical research (source: AmCham Indonesia).

An example is Bayer, which recently invested 8.1 million euros in the expansion of its factory in Cimanggis (West Java). This factory produces multivitamins and medicines, about 75% of which is exported to 26 countries.

Concurrently, Indonesia's largest pharmaceutical company, Kalbe Farma, is shifting from being a maker of generic drugs to a high-tech pharma developer. Besides producing cancer drugs, Kalbe has been investing in R&D on stem cell therapies. Significantly, a lack of generic substitutes in these fields in Indonesia implies no government-set price ceilings, and therefore these products offer higher margins.

In fact, there are more than 200 drugmakers in Indonesia, most of which produce only low-margin generics. While they control 95% of the market by volume, they have a combined 75% share in value terms. Therefore the few multinationals operating in the country have been able to make more profits because of their focus on high-value products.

Such activities are taking place while Indonesian President Joko Widodo is pushing its universal health care program to cover the country's projected population of 270 million by 2019, a leap from the 170 million currently covered. This year for the first time, government expenditures on health care reached the legally mandated 5% of the state budget. Health care spending is expected to grow 12% every year through 2020.

Minister Proposes cut in transshipment costs

One of the focus will be the Transportation Ministry proposal of a cut in transshipment costs in a bid to boost competitiveness and yield more volume into the country's hub ports.

"We are concerned that there are a lot of ports that conduct direct call. If the transshipment cost is lower, then there will be more goods going to Tanjung Priok and Tanjung Perak, and it will be cheaper than direct call," said Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi, referring to two of the country's major ports in Jakarta and Surabaya, East Java.

The ports that are slated to serve as hubs include Kuala Tanjung (North Sumatra), Bitung (North Sulawesi), Makassar (South Sulawesi), Sorong (West Papua), as well as Tanjung Priok and Tanjung Perak.

The new concept will strengthen Tanjung Priok's role as a domestic and international hub port as imported goods will transit through it.

12-Oct-2016 Malaysia's Child, Baby and Maternity Industry to Witness Exponential Growth over Coming Years

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, Oct. 12, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- According to Nielsen, Malaysia's population growth is expected to hit 34.9 million by the year 2025 with 25% of the total expected population representing newborns, infants and children. Coupled with Nielsen's latest Consumer Confidence Index of the Southeast Asia region at 110 points (compared to global average of 97 points) and rapid urbanisation, the children, baby and maternity industry is expected to see exponential growth creating a need for premium baby and maternity products.
